Relevance of etiquettes in youngsters

"Politeness and consideration for others is like investing pennies and getting dollars back."- Thomas Sowell

Youth- a word that has acquired a lot of importance over the last decade. Future is something we all look at with a lot of interest, because it is yet to come. We all wish to make our future extremely colourful and bright.

The reason for thrusting so much responsibility on the shoulders of youngsters is obvious: their energy and immense capability to perform tasks dexterously.

But, when we think of all these things, where do etiquettes stand? Firstly, what is the importance of etiquettes, such that they need to compulsorily be imbibed by youngsters?

Etiquettes basically allude to good habits and values. They are inculcated in children right from their birth. 'Don't bite your nails', 'Wish good morning', 'Respect elders'; these are all phrases any kid is accustomed to hear.

The importance of these 'good manners' is seen in the way society perceives a youngster/child to be. For instance, a child who wishes every elder on his way is given a lot of respect and appreciation, while a child who refrains from doing so is looked down upon or ignored.
These etiquettes also reflect in the way youngsters express themselves. The 'good-mannered' perform their actions with a lot of respect for authority, while the 'bad-mannered' ones usually express themselves freely, without caring about the position of any person.

The problem arises when these so-called 'bad-mannered' kids are asked to learn from their counterparts who are 'good-mannered', which often creates factions in any social group. This is something despicable, but it is a reality.

Etiquettes are undoubtedly indispensable. They are required in good proportions for society to function effectively. Being well-mannered is something that not only garners appreciation, but also eventually leads to a clear conscience and a happy life.

But, judging a youngster on the basis of his/her mannerisms might not augur well both for his as well as the society's future. Judgments can only add fuel to the fire, as it rekindles the energy within any youngster to rebel.

Perhaps finding out the reason behind his/her being rebellious or delinquent is of greater importance. Maybe there are certain reasons behind his/her performing such actions. Thus, empathising with such kids will result in their becoming more confident and self- aware. In turn, they will also begin following the moral codes of society. All they require is someone to lend an ear to them, and understand their perspective towards life.

Of course, in today's day and age, giving that kind of time and energy towards youngsters is not feasible for many people. But, comparing conformists with non-conformists isn't the solution to making the future a really bright one. The need of the hour is to understand that no two people can ever be the same. This world requires a  mixture of 'conformists and 'non-conformists' to function efficiently. The so-called 'non-conformists' might actually exhibit certain wonderful values that the 'conformists' might not be able to match.

Thus, etiquettes are important, but attitude counts for far more in life. Having wonderful etiquettes will get you a lot of respect and momentary satisfaction, but having a wonderful attitude will keep you going in the path towards your dreams.

Let us be well-mannered, dignified and humble. But, let us also have the vigour and courage to go against the tide, and bring about changes in this dynamic and beautiful world of ours.

Here is a short quote by John C. Maxwell that has a much bigger meaning hidden within-
"People may hear your words, but they feel your attitude."

Tribute to Shri Narayan Rajamani: selflessness personified

There are occasions in life that compel us to pause and reflect on the very meaning of existing as sentient beings in this world. Death is a phenomenon that unsettles even the most spiritually-inclined person. When someone with whom there exists a deep, layered bond suddenly departs for the heavenly abode, it invariably leaves one disoriented. The passing away of my maternal grandfather Shri Narayan Rajamani on the 13th of January 2023 placed me in such a situation. Ever since I was informed about his demise, I have been saturated with thoughts- ranging from the numerous interactions I had with him to the lessons that I constantly derived from his art of living. I desperately have been wanting to write a tribute for my grandpa, but even before I started, I realised that grandpa’s life cannot easily be captured in an article or two. According to Smt. Vijaya Pushkarna, former Deputy Chief of Bureau for The Week magazine and closely associated with Shri Rajamani, my grandfather's lif...

What do our modern schools teach- discipline or slavery

If you ask any school for its objectives and aims, one can ensure that discipline will be one of the key objectives of any school. 'Discipline'. This is word which has received several connotations over the past few generations. You have various forms of discipline like 'self-discipline', 'sports discipline', 'behavioural discipline', and of course academic discipline. We don't need to go too far to understand this. Here is the Oxford Dictionary meaning of discipline- The training of people to obey rules or a code of behaviour. This definition summarises what is being currently taught in modern schools, moreso in India. Children are being treated like slaves. "Walk in a line", "Cut your hair", "Walk with your hands at the back", are few common phrases associated with discipline in schools.  I being a child myself find it irritating at times. Sometimes, I feel like a slave obeying a master's comm...

Poem- All it takes is humanity

Waves in the oceans are symbolic of transmitting happiness and joy in our surroundings. Life is incomplete without the human expressions of gratitude and appreciation. The ocean exemplifies this by constantly churning out wave after wave, that spread happiness and joy in the surroundings. It was an eerie silence a silence that became my guru a silence that epitomised the colour blue a silence that made me reach out for the world, a silence that made me understand what is undeniable and true! Yes, I was standing on the sea-shore yes, there was a lot of disturbance yes, as people loitered along with discussions galore I remained undeterred, in a state of oblivion and penance Observing the sea, yes I was I closely watched the waves move up and down carrying everything that came along its way along with the electric message of peace, from dusk till dawn. I observed a little longer to find that far away from the horizon the waves were carrying a spec...
