What do our modern schools teach- discipline or slavery

If you ask any school for its objectives and aims, one can ensure that discipline will be one of the key objectives of any school. 'Discipline'. This is word which has received several connotations over the past few generations. You have various forms of discipline like 'self-discipline', 'sports discipline', 'behavioural discipline', and of course academic discipline.

We don't need to go too far to understand this. Here is the Oxford Dictionary meaning of discipline-
The training of people to obey rules or a code of behaviour.

This definition summarises what is being currently taught in modern schools, moreso in India. Children are being treated like slaves. "Walk in a line", "Cut your hair", "Walk with your hands at the back", are few common phrases associated with discipline in schools.

I being a child myself find it irritating at times. Sometimes, I feel like a slave obeying a master's command. Yes, teachers are our masters. But, should schools teach children how to become slaves and obey commands?
Sadly, modern  education is only teaching children how to bow your head down in front of someone superior. In this current world of authority and aggression, such a training will not lead to the 'holistic' development of a child.

The question which arises is- Do children really need to be taught how to live in discipline? It is said that you cannot throttle something on to children. if a child is left to live naturally, he/she will surely blossom.
Then, should discipline be eradicated from school?
The answer firmly is -No.

We must not forget that discipline is a very important part of our life. We cannot perform any task to perfection without doing it with discipline and commitment. If any task is performed in a haphazard manner, it would not lead to good results.
The solution is that the word 'Discipline' should not be misinterpreted. We must think of discipline to be a symbol of perfection and dedication. Children should be taught how to live life in a disciplined and orderly manner. They shouldn't be told to behave like slaves. Instead, they should be given freedom to express themselves the way they want. That is when the world will be a more free and amicable place to live in.............

Tribute to Shri Narayan Rajamani: selflessness personified

There are occasions in life that compel us to pause and reflect on the very meaning of existing as sentient beings in this world. Death is a phenomenon that unsettles even the most spiritually-inclined person. When someone with whom there exists a deep, layered bond suddenly departs for the heavenly abode, it invariably leaves one disoriented. The passing away of my maternal grandfather Shri Narayan Rajamani on the 13th of January 2023 placed me in such a situation. Ever since I was informed about his demise, I have been saturated with thoughts- ranging from the numerous interactions I had with him to the lessons that I constantly derived from his art of living. I desperately have been wanting to write a tribute for my grandpa, but even before I started, I realised that grandpa’s life cannot easily be captured in an article or two. According to Smt. Vijaya Pushkarna, former Deputy Chief of Bureau for The Week magazine and closely associated with Shri Rajamani, my grandfather's lif...

How an eraser can change our life...

Perhaps one of the most under-rated accessories in our lives is the eraser. You would recall using it most frequently in my younger days, when you wrote alphabets, words and sentences in an incorrect manner, and were forced to erase them and rewrite them correctly. As we grow older, we begin using pens, and the use of the eraser becomes obsolete. But, have you ever thought about the various life-lessons an easily dispensable eraser can teach us? Well, it indeed can. Let us see how... Source- India Mart An eraser is cuboidal in shape when we initially purchase it. Most erasers are white in colour. When I was young, I would admire the pure white colour on its surface. How I wished everything was white like that eraser. In fact, at times, I even wanted darkness to be white in colour! The reason was simple- white is surely a much better than black. Why? Well, science has it that white is brighter than black. The white colour  As and when we use the eraser to remo...
