Five learnings from my workshop

Children are said to be the purest form of human existence. I love spending time with them; in particular with those who are aged ten years or below!

Conducting workshops for these kids makes me feel very happy and satisfied. It is not that I am 'teaching' them, and they are sitting down and listening. I maintain a very good rapport with all the kids. I always try and keep my workshops different from other classes. The agenda for my classes rarely includes much time where the kids sit down and listen. I only narrate stories to kids and introduce them to new words to enhance their vocabulary. I spend more time playing games or conducting activities like singing and origami.
Here are a few of my learnings from all the workshops conducted by me thus far:-
1. The energy of kids:-
I do charge a nominal fee for my workshops. But, it is not the monetary factor which keeps me going. It is the feeling of being in the company of kids which actually motivates me and refreshes me. Kids exude positive energy. Their energy is indeed sublime, and I feel blessed in their presence.

2. The feeling of adding value to someone else:-
When the kids perform well in front of their parents, I feel very touched. The Finale is always like a Result Day for me. My last workshop, ‘Nurturing Young Minds’ concluded just three days before my Tenth Standard result was declared. But, I considered the Finale to be any day more important than my Result. Yes, Results are important in deciding which college or school I have to join. But, tell me one thing, which college or school in this world will give me this kind of exposure, where I learn how to teach kids and bring out the best in them?

3. Learning more about children:-
In this process, I have learnt a lot about child psychology! Having taken up psychology in my eleventh standard, the experience surely taught me many new things about kids. Children cannot be made to sit at one place and listen to someone teaching them. They love activities and games. Handling them for a few days all by myself was a tough task. I had to face many challenges, but successfully overcame them. I believe that those challenges will take me ahead in life.

4. Learning how to sell my product:-
But, yes, I think the most important learning out of this workshop was that I learnt how to sell a product. When I was struggling for registrations, I got really worried. I was literally on the streets trying to convince people to get their kids enrolled for this workshop. Ultimately, I got a substantial number of registrations towards the end, but those moments where I struggled will remain in my memory for sure!

5. Handling money effectively:-
I learnt how to maintain an account, and note down all the overhead and rental costs. It is always good to have the experience of managing money effectively.

Those moments spent with kids will surely be cherished by me throughout my life. I would always keep those in memory as I move ahead in my life.

I pen down my learnings so that when I look back upon them many years from now, I feel proud of the start I had made, and how I had to toil it out to achieve something substantial.

Tribute to Shri Narayan Rajamani: selflessness personified

There are occasions in life that compel us to pause and reflect on the very meaning of existing as sentient beings in this world. Death is a phenomenon that unsettles even the most spiritually-inclined person. When someone with whom there exists a deep, layered bond suddenly departs for the heavenly abode, it invariably leaves one disoriented. The passing away of my maternal grandfather Shri Narayan Rajamani on the 13th of January 2023 placed me in such a situation. Ever since I was informed about his demise, I have been saturated with thoughts- ranging from the numerous interactions I had with him to the lessons that I constantly derived from his art of living. I desperately have been wanting to write a tribute for my grandpa, but even before I started, I realised that grandpa’s life cannot easily be captured in an article or two. According to Smt. Vijaya Pushkarna, former Deputy Chief of Bureau for The Week magazine and closely associated with Shri Rajamani, my grandfather's lif...

Dadabhai Naoroji- Statesman and revolutionary in his own right

The conventional narrative of the Indian national movement often accords centrality to the non-violent agitation spearheaded by the Indian National Congress. Many moderate leaders from late 19th century have not been given adequate importance given that they believed in 'petition politics' which didn't successfully elicit much popular support. Marxist historians have also shown little interest in studying the lives of these thinkers, who have been shunned as members of a 'bourgeois elite' allegedly collaborating with the British. Such notions have especially gained credence in the light of the perceived success of the non-violent movement. However, such an approach assumes a teleological unfolding of historical events, and ignores the fluid interplay of ideas that contributed to the distinctness of the Indian national movement. The gravitas of this movement can only truly be understood if all these ideological sources are duly acknowledged and thoroughly scrutinised...

Poem- All it takes is humanity

Waves in the oceans are symbolic of transmitting happiness and joy in our surroundings. Life is incomplete without the human expressions of gratitude and appreciation. The ocean exemplifies this by constantly churning out wave after wave, that spread happiness and joy in the surroundings. It was an eerie silence a silence that became my guru a silence that epitomised the colour blue a silence that made me reach out for the world, a silence that made me understand what is undeniable and true! Yes, I was standing on the sea-shore yes, there was a lot of disturbance yes, as people loitered along with discussions galore I remained undeterred, in a state of oblivion and penance Observing the sea, yes I was I closely watched the waves move up and down carrying everything that came along its way along with the electric message of peace, from dusk till dawn. I observed a little longer to find that far away from the horizon the waves were carrying a spec...
