"A professional writer is an amateur who didn't quit."
- Richard Bach
Writing is such a beautiful activity, one that stimulates a person to large extent. It is indeed difficult to write about 'writing' because the experience cannot be put in words. It is much beyond that. It is a process where a person learns a lot, not only about the external environment, but also about the inner self.
Writing is also a very satisfactory task. When we write a page or two, we feel that we have written something original, and that feeling of satisfaction is insurmountable. Using good vocabulary, phrases, idioms and metaphors make us feel all the more pleased with our write-ups. Moreover, if our writing helps someone else, it makes us feel very contented.
You too may be experiencing something similar when you write.
But, what if, sometimes, you are unable to put your thoughts into words?
But, what if, sometimes, you are unable to put your thoughts into words?
What if you feel that your content is not at all good?
What if, at times, you feel that you are not that good a writer?
In simple words, what you might have experienced (or are experiencing) is called a writer's block. It is usually used when a person writes a novel, and is thinking of a fitting plot. But, this is also true for bloggers and analysts. I have also faced this on many occasions, and have given my best to come out of the block, and write even more eloquently.
If it has happened with you, you needn't worry! Nearly every established author would have gone through this phase. What requires immense willpower is to come out of that situation unscathed.
B- TAKE A BREAK- You can take a break from writing for a few days, say 5-7 days. Look at your surroundings with keen interest, read more books, and rejuvenate yourself so that you can get back to your writing in a few days, and continue the process. Listen to soothing music, and meditate whenever time permits. This will ease out the tension from your mind, and you will feel peaceful internally. Writing fiction is all about linking various events. The break can help in stimulating new thoughts in your mind, which can surely become a part of your story.
L- LEARN- Try and exercise your eyes a little. Read a lot so that you can understand the style in which writers write. For instance, Chetan Bhagat's style is different from that of Sudha Murty's. Nonetheless, both write beautifully, and are best-selling authors. Compare the writing styles of different authors and attempt at giving critiques for the books you read. This will help you in understanding your own style, and make it even more better. Thus, you can learn from the styles used by other authors.
O- ORGANISE- This is an important task, as it enables you to find out time for writing. Very often, writers face a 'writer's block' because there are so many thoughts cluttered in the mind. Writing is meant to be done when the mind is absolutely at peace. Everyone performs different tasks in their day to day life. Forming a time-table is a good idea, as it will ensure that you write only at that time of the day when you actually feel like expressing yourself. Thus, you wouldn't be compromising on studies or work, and can divide all tasks equally.
C-CONFIDENCE- BELIEVE
IN YOURSELF. Believe in the fact that God has gifted you with the power to
write and bring about a change in this world. The block is like a hurdle on your path towards becoming a
famous author. Write your goal down on a piece of paper, and put it above your
writing table. Look at it everytime you wake up in the morning. Look at it
everytime you feel, ‘Oh, why am I writing?’. It will give you the required confidence to move ahead with your writing.
K- KINDNESS- Don't be too harsh on yourself. Some amount of kindness towards yourself will do you a whole lot of good. Don't consider writing to be a burden. If it is turning out to be so, leave writing for a while (as has been suggested earlier), and restart only when you feel like writing.
Remember one thing- You are writing because you wish to express your feelings and help others. Relax, and enjoy your life. Write whenever you feel like, don't stress yourself about it.
Lastly, write because you can bring about a change in this world in your own ways. No two people are similar, and thus everyone has a different style of expression. Thus, never feel that you don't write well or that your style is not good. Every writing style is wonderful in in its own ways. Focus, and you are bound to be a wonderful writer.
Follow these steps, and do get back if they help you overcome your block, and achieve greater heights!
